Bringing the Taste of Sri Lanka Closer to Home
Ceylon Shop was created from a simple idea — authentic Sri Lankan food should still feel authentic, even when you are thousands of miles away from Sri Lanka.
We want to make traditional Sri Lankan flavours easier to discover, enjoy and share across the UK, while supporting a food culture built around generations of recipes, ingredients and traditions.
It Started With a Taste I Couldn't Replace
After moving to the UK, one of the things I missed most was the authentic taste of Sri Lankan food.
Polos curry — young jackfruit cooked with traditional Sri Lankan spices — was always one of my favourites. Although many ingredients and Asian food products were available in the UK, finding the familiar taste and character of the food I grew up with was not always easy.
That experience created a simple question: If I was looking for these flavours, how many other Sri Lankans living away from home were looking for the same thing?
Traditional Flavours Made Convenient
I began looking for products that could bring traditional Sri Lankan dishes to customers without losing the character that makes them special.
That journey introduced me to a range of Sri Lankan foods inspired by familiar home-style cooking — from Polos and breadfruit curry to mallum, sambols, chutneys and other traditional favourites.
The idea behind Ceylon Shop gradually became bigger than simply selling groceries. It became about making authentic Sri Lankan food culture more accessible to people living busy lives in the UK.
Keeping Tradition Relevant for Modern Life
Traditional Sri Lankan cooking is rich in vegetables, spices, coconut, herbs and ingredients that have been part of everyday food culture for generations.
But modern life is busy. Our aim is to make it easier for customers to enjoy those familiar foods without always needing hours of preparation. We carefully develop our range around foods that represent the diversity of Sri Lankan cuisine while offering the convenience expected by today's customers.
A Connection to Home
For many Sri Lankans living in the UK, food is much more than something we eat. It is family. It is childhood.
It is the smell of a kitchen at home, a meal shared with relatives, a favourite curry or a flavour that immediately takes you back to Sri Lanka.
Ceylon Shop exists to help keep that connection alive — and at the same time introduce these remarkable flavours to people who may be discovering Sri Lankan food for the first time.
Growing Through the Sri Lankan Community
What began as an online journey is growing into a wider network.
Today, we work to make our products available not only through Ceylon Shop online, but also through independent retailers and Asian grocery stores serving Sri Lankan communities across the UK. We also attend community events, meet customers face to face and listen carefully to the products and flavours they would like to see next.
